From defensive beginnings and the conflict of Civil War to Tudor banqueting and Victorian decadence, the architectural splendour of these fortresses always stirs the soul.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only the UK&#8217;s best castles but also among it&#8217;s most historic come and learn about the Welsh nation&#8217;s history through the buildings that defended it.<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laugharne Castle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;imposing Taf estuary beauty of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cadw.gov.wales\/visit\/places-to-visit\/laugharne-castle\">Laugharne Castle<\/a>&nbsp;is forever associated with Dylan Thomas, who escaped writer\u2019s block at the 11th century ruins. Run by the National Trust, it has wonderful views and guided tours that take in the nearby nature reserve, cottages, ponds, a croquet lawn and a tea room. Look out for the rutting deer and cows who might join you during a stroll around the 18th century landscape park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caernarfon Castle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Edward I wasn\u2019t messing around when he built this polygonal 13th century castle on a former Roman fort. Part of the coastal World Heritage Site, the mighty&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cadw.gov.wales\/visit\/places-to-visit\/caernarfon-castle\/?lang=en\">Caernarfon Castle<\/a>remains one of the most visually arresting sights you\u2019ll ever see. Fifty-five acres of country park await, as well as events such as re-enactments and a tearoom for unwinding.<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conwy Castle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perched on a rock against the backdrop of Snowdonia,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cadw.gov.wales\/visit\/places-to-visit\/conwy-castle\">Conwy Castle<\/a>&nbsp;has an indisputably magical feel. Some consider it the finest castle Edward I built, and the mesmerising views from the battlements are particularly famed within the walled town. Circle the two vast round towers and walk between the walls of the Earl of Pembroke\u2019s creation on a gorge \u2013 home to a castle which, even by Welsh standards, is particularly beautiful.<br>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caerphilly Castle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The largest castle in Wales, and the second-largest in Britain,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cadw.gov.wales\/visit\/places-to-visit\/caerphilly-castle\">Caerphilly Castle<\/a>&nbsp;was locked within water defences when it was built by the English during the 13th century. The elegant staterooms inside are an interior dream, combining elaborate plasterwork with a medieval tower, a dungeon and an 18th century Servants\u2019 Hall.
